Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
