Shifting from Praise to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.
Conservative responses to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives defended the heavily censored sections with fervent exaggerated language. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, a segment of conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their identities blacked out.
Yet some are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty ironic how the political left falsely accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Overall Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
Nonetheless, broader comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the legislative vote to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
